SAINT
Doll Artist: Barb Kobe
Created 2002
I had been reading about feminist
psychology and women's spirituality and I was raised in the Catholic
church. Most of what I call my healing dolls have an intention to
heighten my consciousness about what I believe and change some aspect of
my life -- physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual. I started with
the design, remembering the images on the walls and the altar of my
childhood church. Once the design has begun in my head it leads the
way to the completion of the doll. As I continued my studies and
worked on the doll I started to connect with messages the church was
giving to women in the 1950's and 60's and that I took in - that I am
unworthy of love, that I must give take care of others first and that I
should always be a good girl-saintly. The doll's hands come together
over her heart (self-love), and she is looking inward for self reflection.
The three rectangles at the bottom have little dolls resting inside,
"pieces of herself", having come home after being
"spent" taking care of others. I used green to represent heart
charka; red for women's sensuality; and purple for
spirit. January-February
